Located on the northern banks of Tungabhadra River, about 20kms from the resort, the Anegundi village has a rich past that dates back to almost 5000 years. Legend has it, that this village was the monkey kingdom of Kishkinda as per the Ramayana. Another legend says that the kings of the mighty Vijayanagar Empire used Anegundi as a dock for their elephants, and the name is derived from ‘Aanai’ which means elephant in the native tongue. Punctuated by rocky hills, intermittent greenery, and the Tungabhadra river, this village harbours ancient temples and remarkable stone sculptures.

Virupaksha Temple

Standing tall, on the southern bank of the river Tungabadra, Virupaksha Temple, is a pilgrimage destination that sees thousands of tourists pouring in on a daily basis. It’s only 7kms from the resort and happens to be a destination of great religious significance. Not only is it the oldest temple in Hampi, it was a hub for native culture, art and crafts during the 14th century. Extensive renovations have transformed how this temple looks. But one thing that has remained static over the years, is the devotion that flows through its holy sanctum. The “gopuram” or centre shrine is one of the most prominently seen structures in Hampi and is worth a visit.
